St Paul’s Cathedral

Case study
St Paul’s Cathedral explained
St Paul's Cathedral is one of the UK's most iconic institutions and a landmark at the heart of London. Welcoming around 1.7 million visitors annually before the pandemic, the Cathedral supports a diverse range of activities, including worship, education, cultural events and tourism. As a Grade I listed building with a global reputation and a mission that extends far beyond its physical walls, maintaining effective communication across teams is essential.
Like many historic organisations, St Paul's was balancing the need to preserve tradition while embracing modern ways of working. As expectations around flexibility, collaboration and digital services continued to evolve, the Cathedral recognised the opportunity to modernise its communications environment and create a platform capable of supporting its long-term objectives.

The business challenge
The Cathedral's existing on-premises phone system was becoming increasingly difficult to justify. It lacked the flexibility and functionality required by a modern organisation, and upgrading the platform would have required significant investment while delivering only incremental improvements.
As a charitable organisation, achieving value for money was a critical consideration. The Cathedral wanted a solution that could provide greater capability without increasing complexity or unnecessary cost.
The urgency of this challenge increased during the pandemic, when staff across the organisation needed to work remotely while continuing to support the Cathedral's operations, visitors and wider mission. Existing communications tools were not designed for this level of flexibility, creating the need for a more modern, resilient and collaborative approach.
"The move from on-premise to the cloud has delivered much more than a new phone system for St Paul's."
The solution
Charterhouse worked with St Paul's Cathedral to implement a modern cloud communications solution designed to support flexible working, collaboration and long-term digital transformation. The platform combined voice, messaging, video conferencing and collaboration capabilities within a single environment, giving employees access to the tools they needed wherever they worked.
Beyond the technology itself, Charterhouse provided project management, number porting, user training and ongoing service support to ensure a smooth transition from the legacy environment. The migration was carefully planned to minimise disruption while driving adoption from day one.
The new solution also simplified administration and provided a more scalable foundation for future growth. Importantly, it delivered greater functionality, flexibility and long-term value while avoiding the significant investment required to upgrade the existing on-premises platform.
The transformation
Moving communications to the cloud fundamentally changed how teams across St Paul's Cathedral could work and collaborate. Staff gained the ability to communicate from any location and on any device, removing many of the limitations imposed by traditional office-based telephony.
The solution brought calling, messaging, meetings and collaboration tools together in a single user experience, reducing complexity and giving employees greater flexibility in how they worked. This proved particularly valuable during periods of remote working, enabling staff to remain connected and productive while continuing to support the Cathedral's operations, visitors and wider mission.
Rather than simply replacing an ageing phone system, the project created a modern communications foundation capable of supporting future organisational needs and evolving ways of working.
The outcome
The project delivered benefits far beyond a telephony refresh. Staff can now collaborate more effectively, communicate from any location and access the tools they need through a single, integrated platform.
The solution improved flexibility, simplified communications and enabled new ways of working across the organisation. It also provided greater resilience and scalability while delivering stronger value than a traditional infrastructure upgrade.
"Enhanced features that are easy to use and integrate with our other systems have revolutionised the way we work. The multiple benefits have been far reaching and are fundamental in helping us continue in our mission."
